✨ Advice column ✨
Hungry vs desperate and why people can tell
The other day I was talking to one of my coworkers and somehow the conversation turned into how I think the job is going. I recently started full time after graduating from college :) and he told me he has been hearing good feedback and that it seems like I actually like it. Then out of nowhere he said “you’re passionate… you’re hungry.”
And I just sat there like… hungry? is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Because for the past few weeks I’ve been doing what I thought I was supposed to do. Asking people who else I should introduce myself to. Trying to meet more people. Trying to learn fast. Trying to be around the right conversations. And I didn’t even realize how that might come across until he said that.
So I started thinking about it more. And even asking other coworkers what they think “hungry” means.
And I think what I realized is that people can feel the difference between someone who is hungry and someone who is desperate almost immediately. Not because they’re overanalyzing you, but because of how you move.
Hungry feels calm. It feels like you’re curious but you have some direction. Like you’re asking questions because you actually want to understand something, not just because you think you should be asking. It feels like you’re building real relationships, not just trying to meet as many people as possible.
Desperate feels different. It feels rushed. Like you’re reaching for anything. Talking to everyone the same way. Asking for opportunities before you even understand what’s going on. And I think the biggest difference is that when you’re desperate, people can feel that you need something from them, instead of wanting to learn from them.
And that changes everything.
Because when someone feels like you’re hungry, they want to help you. They want to invest in you. They remember you. But when it feels desperate, even if your intentions are good, it can come off like they’re just part of your checklist.
That comment honestly made me reflect on how I’ve been moving these past few weeks. Like instead of asking “who else should I meet?” I’ve been trying to slow down and think “what am I actually trying to learn right now?” and “who would actually help me understand that?”
It’s such a small shift but it changes the energy completely.
I think especially when you’re starting your career, it’s so easy to feel like you have to prove yourself fast. Like you have to meet everyone, know everything, be everywhere. And that’s where that desperate energy can sneak in without you even realizing it.
But hunger is not about doing more. It’s about being intentional.
And the crazy part is you don’t have to convince people you’re hungry. They can already tell. It shows in how you ask questions, how you listen, and how you follow up.
