ฅ՞•ﻌ•՞ฅ Hi girlies!
Hi everyone, and welcome to our new subscribers 💕
If you are new here, welcome to Girls on Campus! We share scholarships, internships, fellowships, college programs, and career opportunities for high school and college students. We also host in-person events and are currently planning more in San Francisco for interns and students looking for internships.
Last week, I shared a reminder that summer can feel overwhelming when everyone seems to be looking for jobs, internships, or programs.
So here is your reminder for this week: you are not behind.
Your summer does not need to look perfect to matter. A local job, volunteering, helping your family, taking a free course, resting, or simply exploring your interests all count.
If you are ready to start applying, we will keep sharing paid opportunities, internships, scholarships, and student-friendly programs here and on Instagram.
And for our Bay Area community, stay tuned — we are planning more in-person events in SF soon
With love,
Girls on Campus

Advice column: Intern season 🌸
It’s officially intern season, and at my job we currently have an intern who is a rising senior. One of the first things I told her was this:
You have to learn how to adapt to every person you work with without losing your true self.
And just as important: you have to stay professional with everyone.
Every internship is different. Every manager is different. Every team is different. Some people will explain things step by step. Some will expect you to figure things out. Some will be very direct. Some will be more hands-off. Part of growing professionally is learning how to read the room, understand different work styles, and adjust how you communicate. But adapting does not mean pretending to be someone you are not.
It means learning how to work with different personalities while still being honest about what you need, what you care about, and how you want to grow. One thing I always tell interns is to keep professionalism in the back of your mind at all times. Be kind to everyone. Be respectful to everyone. The way you treat people matters, not only when you are speaking to your manager, but also when you are talking to other interns, assistants, security, front desk staff, clients, recruiters, or anyone else you meet. You never know who is paying attention, who is connected to whom, or who may remember how you made them feel.
For example, if someone gives you a task that feels small, stay professional. Instead of acting annoyed or saying, “That’s it?” you can say:
“Thank you, I’ll take care of this. Once I finish, I’d also love to help with anything else that needs support.”
If you feel like you are not being challenged, do not complain or make it sound like the work is beneath you. Instead, say:
“Hi, I’ve really enjoyed learning through the tasks I’ve been given so far. I wanted to share that I would love to take on more responsibility or support a project where I can make a bigger impact. Is there anything coming up where I could contribute more?”
That is not complaining. That is advocating for yourself professionally.
If someone gives you feedback, stay open. Even if the feedback feels direct, try not to take it personally right away. You can say:
“Thank you for the feedback. I’ll make sure to apply that moving forward.”
If you make a mistake, own it. Do not hide it or blame someone else. You can say:
“Thank you for catching that. I see what happened, and I’ll fix it right away.”
If you are confused, ask questions. It is better to ask early than to stay quiet and submit something incorrect. You can say:
“Just to make sure I’m understanding correctly, would you like me to focus on this part first?”
And if you are in a room with people who have more experience than you, listen first. Observe how they communicate, how they ask questions, and how they explain their ideas. You do not always need to prove that you belong by speaking the most. Sometimes professionalism is knowing when to listen, when to ask, and when to contribute.
A lot of interns think they have to wait to be noticed, but sometimes growth comes from speaking up in a respectful and clear way. Your manager may not know you want more unless you say it. They may think you are comfortable with your current workload.
The key is to be honest, but also thoughtful. Do not say, “I’m bored” or “this work is not important.” Instead, frame it around growth, learning, and impact.
Internships are not just about doing the work. They are about learning how to communicate, how to receive feedback, how to ask questions, how to build relationships, and how to understand yourself in a professional environment.
So my advice is this: adapt, but don’t disappear.
Be flexible. Be open. Learn from everyone. Stay professional with everyone. But also remember that your voice matters, your goals matter, and you are allowed to ask for opportunities that help you grow.
